NACTOY Winners Event Will Return to the Detroit Auto Show in 2025

DETROIT – Jan. 16, 2024 – Once again, the best vehicles of the year will serve as the ignition switch for Detroit’s Auto Show. The next ceremony to announce the 2025 winners of the North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year™ (NACTOY) awards will be held at Huntington Place in Detroit next January at the start of the North American International Auto Show.

The Auto Show’s return to its traditional January date allows the NACTOY ceremony to return to a position it held for a quarter of a century. As the show experimented with new dates over the past five years, NACTOY had announced the winners at a standalone event. In 2023 and 2024 the event was held at M1 Concourse in Pontiac.

“We are thrilled to be back home,” said Jeff Gilbert, NACTOY President and Auto Reporter for WWJ Newsradio 950 in Detroit. “The team at M1 Concourse was wonderful to work with over the past two years, but we have a thirty-year relationship with the Detroit Auto Show. Honoring the “best of the best” vehicles is the perfect way to open the show.”

“The auto show has a longstanding and special relationship with NACTOY, and we are excited to reunite where it all began in 1994 at the January Detroit Auto Show,” said Rod Alberts, executive director of the Detroit Auto Show.  “What a great way to kick off the new year and set the stage for our reimagined January show than with the highly anticipated announcement of the most coveted automotive awards in North America.”

When organizers for the Detroit Auto Show decided in 2021 to shift its schedule from January to September, NACTOY adapted its schedule accordingly and used its platform at the show to announce the semifinalist vehicles – now called “The Best Of” – at the show. This milestone was followed by the finalists announcement at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the winners announcement at M1 Concourse.

NACTOY has earned the respect of consumers, the industry and the press as a prestigious and unbiased award because its 50 jurors are not affiliated with any one publication, but instead represent a diverse swath of outlets featuring outstanding automotive journalism. Automakers look to NACTOY as an important barometer of the media’s perception of new vehicles, while consumers often consider a NACTOY winner or finalist as an ideal candidate for their next vehicle.

Gilbert and the NACTOY board members are available for interviews about the organization, its history and voting process. For more information about NACTOY, please visit

The awards are intended to recognize the most outstanding new vehicles of the year. These vehicles are benchmarks in their segments based on factors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction, user experience and value. The organization gives out three awards. They are: “North American Car of the Year™,” “North American Truck of the Year™,” and the “North American Utility Vehicle of the Year™.” The awards are unique because they are given by an independent jury of automotive journalists from the United States and Canada instead of by a single publication, website, radio or television station.
